The Square: A Revolutionary Housing Solution

Architect Mohamed Yasser's Tetris-Inspired Design Wins Silver A' Design Award

Architect Mohamed Yasser's innovative housing project, The Square, offers a unique solution to housing challenges in developing countries. Inspired by the Tetris game and traditional Arab architecture, Yasser's design was awarded Silver in the A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2020.

Yasser's design is a study in architectural relations between different geometrical shapes. The Square consists of six units, each made from two shipping containers fixed over each other to form an L shape. These units are arranged in overlapping positions, creating a dynamic interplay of voids and solids. This arrangement not only gives the feeling of movement but also ensures sufficient natural light and ventilation.

The design draws inspiration from the Tetris game, which relies on a specific unit shape that can create different formations. This concept is mirrored in Yasser's design, where each L-shaped unit fits together to form a shallow cube with a central court. This design feature is reminiscent of traditional Islamic and Arab houses, which prioritized privacy and airflow.

While the design is visually striking, it is the use of technology that sets The Square apart. Nanotechnology coatings are used throughout the project to improve efficiency and energy consumption. The glass is fitted with a SiO2 coating, known as self-cleaning glass, reducing maintenance costs and keeping the glass clean for years. The walls and floors are also fitted with a self-cleaning and anti-bacterial coating, ensuring a clean indoor and outdoor environment.

The design's unique properties extend to its functionality. The Square offers multiple entrances to the central court, two staircases for vertical circulation, and a flexible interior layout within each unit. The central court and backyard also serve as multi-use spaces for events and activities.

The Square is more than just a design concept. It is a practical solution to a pressing problem in developing countries - affordable housing. The design is economical, eco-friendly, and flexible, with the potential for units to be added or subtracted according to need. The project started in July 2019 and is intended to be applied in developing countries.

In conclusion, Mohamed Yasser's The Square is a testament to the power of design in addressing real-world challenges. By combining innovative design with advanced technology, Yasser has created a housing solution that is not only aesthetically pleasing but also practical and sustainable. The Square is a shining example of how architecture can be used to improve lives and communities.
